"Professors Gould and Alouf were so kind and helped me understand what my schedule was going to look like for the next five years, which was a big relief," Rebecca Girten '09, a student in the MAT program, said. "In addition, the physics department faculty — Dr. Hank Yochum, Dr. Scott Hyman and professor Laurna Kaatz — have been absolutely wonderful."
With the assistance of her support team, Rebecca also has found volunteer opportunities that will help her reach her goal of becoming a physics teacher, including Brownie Science Try-It Day and middle school science teacher workshops with SCHEV.
"They have made it perfectly clear that they'll do whatever it takes to help me become a physics teacher," she said. "I can honestly say that I wouldn't be on track with the education program if it weren't for their guidance, helpfulness and support. I'm so thankful to have such a fantastic department!"
Allie Garrison '10
Even before she arrived at Sweet Briar, Allie Garrison '10 tapped into a whole network of support that has helped her realize her goal of becoming a teacher. Her high school Spanish teacher, Sarah Ponton, was a 2000 Sweet Briar graduate and encouraged her to become a Spanish teacher at the secondary level.
When it came time to choose a college, admissions counselor Autum Fish '04 was a "great help" with her decision to attend Sweet Briar. When she visited campus, Megan Behrle '09 was a "fabulous" hostess. "She made my overnight experience so much fun and I really appreciated her taking the time to answer my questions," Allie said.
Now, with the help of faculty advisor Pam DeWeese — who Allie calls "amazing," by the way — Allie is well on her way to achieving her goal. She is doing field research at nearby Nelson County High School and after graduation plans to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching at Sweet Briar.

On most campuses, advising just means helping you choose the right courses to meet degree requirements. Not at Sweet Briar. Here you have the opportunity to draw on the knowledge of professional staff, alumnae, and additional faculty for career-related suggestions and real-world insights that will supplement your in-class experience.
You won't have to rely on just one person; you'll have an entire team at your disposal — a team that you create.
When it comes to selecting the members of your advising team, we'll be there to help and to guide if needed, but you are in the driver's seat. The goal is to choose advisors you feel will be most helpful in your overall development at Sweet Briar. If you change your major or narrow your focus, you can change the composition of your advising team to better reflect your new direction.
At Sweet Briar learning occurs in many different venues — not just the classroom.
