The Sweet Briar Promise

Customizable Majors

Rosanna Hawkins '07

Rosanna Hawkins '07 was a classics major, planning to teach Latin and Greek to high school students, when she decided her heart was in musical theatre. Sweet Briar doesn't have a musical theatre major but, encouraged by her professors, Rosanna created one.

"While it was difficult at times to figure out which classes I had to take and which ones I should take, and making sure all of my classes fit into available times, I feel that it allowed my college experience to take flight [as] more than just four years at school. It became an adventure," she said.

"I loved how personable Sweet Briar allowed my education to be. By enabling me to combine my passions of theatre, music and dance, Sweet Briar not only strengthened my abilities as a performer and future educator but it strengthened my love for the beautiful 3,200 acres that gave me wonderful memories and opportunities."

Krystal Ellis '08

When she transferred to Sweet Briar as a sophomore, Krystal Ellis '08 decided to study business management with the goal of working in the sports industry, either as a coach or in sports administration.

However, after taking Introduction to Women's Sports and Culture with Jennifer Crispen and enjoying it "tremendously," Krystal realized she was passionate about majoring in sports management.

One little hiccup: Sweet Briar doesn't have a sports management major.

Undaunted, and with guidance from her faculty advisor, Krystal created her own major — sports management. She takes business and general education classes at Sweet Briar and sports management courses at nearby Lynchburg College.

"I love my major and have enjoyed the experience greatly," Krystal said. "It definitely has been a factor in my decision to stay at Sweet Briar College."

How do you choose just one major when you're as passionate about art history as you are about biology? Or any other subjects for that matter? At Sweet Briar you don't have to. While we offer more than 40 academic programs, if your interests don't fit into one of these courses of study, you can create your own.

Many Sweet Briar students complete more than one major. You can also combine a minor, a certificate, or a pre-professional program with our principal area of study.

Or, you can formally customize your major — combining classes from two or more academic programs — to creat a one-of-a-kind course of study. Faculty members will work with you to approve the curriculum and your advising team can help you make the real-world connections between your self-designed major and career/graduate study options.

You choose.
